Turffontein Racecourse came alive as Johannesburg witnessed the triumphant revival of Highveld racing with the 2024 Betway Summer Cup. Thanks to strategic marketing and the star power of four-time British Champion Jockey Oisin Murphy, the event captured the imagination of racing fans like never before.
The 2024 Betway Summer Cup delivered drama, exhilaration, and unforgettable moments at Turffontein Racecourse. As Africa’s richest race with record-breaking stakes, the R6 million event lived up to its billing, drawing top-class competitors and a lively crowd. Alec Laird’s ATTICUS FINCH, ridden by Calvin Habib, claimed a sensational victory, bringing the Varsfontein Stud-bred gelding back into the spotlight.
According to Glamour magazine: "This year's Betway Summer Cup promises to paint Johannesburg in bold colours and vibrant silks, blending the sophistication of horse racing with the city's dynamic energy. Inspired by traditional jockey silks, 'Silks in the City' aims to infuse the city with style, vibrancy, and a sense of community.
"Beyond the thrill of the races, the event offers a rich tapestry of experiences, including gourmet cuisine, live music, cultural performances, and fashion showcases. Designers will present collections inspired by the vibrant silks, merging high fashion with the event's spirited theme."

Big Weekend nearing as International Jockey Headlines the Summer Cup
The Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup is a near sell out in terms of its hospitality offerings with only general entrance tickets available for the day.
There is no doubt the box office rider Oisin Murphy had something to do with that as he graces the turf at the historic course for the first time. In fact, it's the reigning British Champions first riding stint in Africa.
Odds-on favorite ONE STRIPE delivered on expectations with an authoritative victory in the Grade 2 Cape Punters Cup over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday. Despite the smooth result, it wasn’t entirely straightforward, as he had to reel in stablemate ALL OUT FOR SIX, who surged to an early lead. However, when Gavin Lerena urged the One World colt into action, he unleashed an electric turn of foot, taking command in the final 100m to win by an emphatic 1.75 lengths.
It’s no secret that South Africa has a dwindling pool of jockeys of decent caliber, and the Summer Bowl Non-Black Type, won by DOUBLE GRAND SLAM, served as a glaring example of this issue.
The race was tailor-made for a front-running effort from RASCOVA from draw 2, who was the horse to beat on paper—if ridden properly. Unfortunately, the ride she received from Denis Schwarz was a disappointing display of race pacing.
Won in amazing style by DO DEUCE.
In a remarkable display of tactical brilliance, the 5-year-old Do Deuce (Heart's Cry Jpn–Dust and Diamonds, by Vindication) secured victory in the prestigious G1 Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday. Guided by the seasoned hands of 55-year-old jockey Yutaka Take, Do Deuce unleashed a powerful late burst from the back of the pack to narrowly edge out Shin Emperor (Fr) (Siyouni Fr) and Durezza (Jpn) (Duramente Jpn), who dead-heated for second. It was a slow run affair making the win extra special.
