The South African rand extended its rally to trade around 16.2 per USD, reaching the highest since June 2022, benefiting from record-high precious metals prices, particularly gold and silver. This theme befits the name of our first documentary:

NATIONAL CURRENCY

National Currency (1999–2004) was a champion South African sprinter by National Assembly out of Enchanted Dollar, trained by Michael Azzie. Renowned for high speed, he won major sprints including the Gold Medallion and Computaform Sprint, and achieved international fame by placing second in the Hong Kong Sprint and winning in Dubai.

• Breeding: Bred by Highlands Farms Stud, he was a son of top sire National Assembly.
• Career Highlights: A dominant force, he won the Gr1 Gold Medallion, Gr1 Computaform Sprint, and Gr1 Mercury Sprint in South Africa.
• International Performance: He achieved a remarkable second place in the 2003 Hong Kong Sprint to Champion Silent Witness and won the Al Shindagha Sprint in Dubai by 6.5 lengths.
• Ownership: Initially raced in partnership, he was later bought for R8 million by Graham Beck.
• Tragic End: Considered one of South Africa's finest modern sprinters, he died in Dubai in 2004 shortly after his win, suspected to be from a snake or scorpion bite.
• Legacy: The Betway National Currency Sprint at Turffontein is held in his honor.
