Congratulations to Argentina - the new world champions!

In what may be one of the greatest World Cup finals of all-time, Argentina ended a 36-year wait and defeated France 4-2 in a penalty shootout to win the FIFA World Cup for the third time on Sunday, 19 December 2022.

Lionel Messi scored twice and France striker Kylian Mbappe hit a hat-trick as a thrilling World Cup final ended 3-3 after extra time!

World Cup Finals

And we have the finals...

France ended Morocco's World Cup dream as goals from Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani gave the holders a 2-0 win in their semi-final clash and set up a showdown on Sunday with Lionel Messi's Argentina.

It will be France's fourth World Cup final in seven editions and they are hoping to become the first team since Brazil (60 years ago) to retain the trophy when they take on Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

Do you think France can retain their title?

Or do you think Argentina can win their first title outside of the Americas?

Semi-finals stage at the World Cup

Four sides still standing after quarter-final drama.

After the most wildly emotional set of quarter-finals in World Cup history, we now know the semi-final line-up for Qatar 2022.

13 Dec
21:00Argentina  3 Croatia  0
14 Dec
21:00France 2 Morocco 0

Points of interest:

  1. If Croatia or Morocco win in the final, they would be the first new world champions since Spain in 2010 (South Africa).
  2. If France win the trophy, they would be the first team to retain the trophy since 1962.
  3. The opening semi-final is a meeting of the last two runners-up: Croatia lost to France in the final in 2018, Argentina to Germany in 2014.
  4. An Argentina victory would be the first in Lionel Messi’s lifetime
  5. Croatia and Argentina both have Golden Ball winners: Luka Modric and Lionel Messi.
  6. Morocco are the first African team ever to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

England bow out of the World Cup...

Pic World Cup Olivier Giroud celebration jpg

Harry Kane missed a late penalty as England lost 2-1 to France to depart the 2022 World Cup at the quarter-final stage.

That proved the final act as England saw their World Cup bid ended by the holders, who were ruthless if not at their very best in a game Southgate's side will feel they could've won.

Will the world champions make it two in a row?

Japan's fans clean up stadium after game

From BBC Sport:

World Cup 2022: Japan's fans clean up stadium after win over Germany

The magnitude of their win over Germany could have seen them go off into the night in celebration but Japan's fans demonstrated that the best manners and habits are ingrained, no matter the situation.

Come full-time, the stands of sporting stadia are usually littered with used food trays and wrappers and empty drinks cups, left behind for someone else to clean up.

But not when the Samurai Blue are in town.

Their players, fresh from a 2-1 victory over the four-time champions in their World Cup opener, had barely left the pitch when the Japanese in the crowd pressed pause on the party to tidy up after themselves at Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.

From the archives: Andrew Bon interviews Gary Player about this historic day.

Tradition demands that Royal Ascot should maintain some composure at all times but the sangfroid slipped on the Thursday afternoon in June 2013 as the Queen became the first reigning monarch in the 207-year history of the Gold Cup to win the Royal meeting's most famous race. Estimate, the 7-2 favourite, delivered the result that most of the Ladies' Day crowd wanted to see and even a big-screen replay of the winning owner's reaction in the final furlong was enough to raise a cheer.

Spring Turf Treatment At Turffontein And Vaal Racecourse

A look back one year ago when this video was produced. I thought it worth another look. - Editor

"What I’d like this feature to cover is the methods our track guys use to prepare the track with specific reference to the annual spring treatments that take place at this time of year. How they deal with track depressions and undulations that develop with wear and tear, best practice with fertilizer applications, compaction relief, turf growth etc. and how these spring treatments are staggered between the various tracks to keep the show on the road all year round.

"As mentioned, we are also embarking on some major enhancements to the Turffontein Inside track and the Vaal Classic track - both of which will have their bends widened significantly this year, thereby providing additional rail movement opportunities to better spread the wear and tear in these critical areas. These initiatives will also create a more sweeping bend to enhance the tracks and the installation of permanent spurs / cutaways at the top of the home straights to create fairer racing too. These major projects are being done in-house by our teams and they will be best placed to give you more details. This hot on the heels of the widening of the common pull up area at Turffontein recently."
