Suzette Viljoen

Interview with David Safi

David: Have you always been involved in horseracing?

Suzette: No, we haven't always been involved in horseracing. I've always wanted a racehorse. One day a mutual friend of one of our partners offered to buy a horse for me if I'm interested in racing. I called him "WHAT A POET (AUS)" and he was the first horse I sent to Corrie Lensley.

David: Did you choose your own colours?

Suzette: Yes, I chose my own colours.

David: Was there any reason that you chose those colours?

Suzette: Yes, the pink beacause I'm a lady and the blue because I'm a Blue Bull's fan.

David: Your first trainer was Corrie Lensley, how many horses have you currently got in training?

Suzette: I've got plus minus 130 horses in training.

David: Are you looking to expand or cut down?

Suzette: No, we aren't looking to expand, if we retire one, we will replace one. We don't want to get too many. We have these resources now and we will have a look at them in the new year and see which ones are due for retirement and we will go from there.

David: Are you going into breeding at all?

Suzette: We do have some mares, but we are still deciding on that one. I know that everybody tells us, "Don't go into breeding..." but there are some of my mares that I really want to keep. They are all special to me, so I struggle to retire them. If they retire, they are going home to the farm.

David: Would you say you're still finding your feet with horseracing? Or would you say that you are well versed at horseracing at this point in time?

Suzette: I don't think that I'm really informed that well, but I think my husband is. I rely a lot on him and his advice. I also rely on my trainers but we do like to choose our own horses when we go to a sale.

David: Your husband is Basie. Does he have a background in horseracing?

Suzette: No, not at all. We don't have any background in horseracing, it was just my dream to have a racehorse. I started with that one and I think I had WHAT A POET (AUS) for 2 days then John Freeman phoned and my next horse was MARCO POLO with the Snaith's. So that's where everything started.

David: Are the horses registered in yours, your husbands or partners names?

Suzette: All of the horses are registered in my name but I do have partners. Some of the horses with the Snaith's. I'm in partnership with several owners, including the International Racing Club. I do have a few partners. I do like racing on my own but I don't mind having partners.

David: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Suzette: I'm really not into punting, I just love the horses. I love horseracing. We try to be where the horses are. We just came from Summerveld now visiting the horses so we absolutely adore the horses that's all.

David: Do you enjoy the maiden plate as much as you enjoy a big race?

Suzette: Yes, I think so because I know where they came from and what their abilities are. If they win a maiden plate and I know that's all that they're going to win, I'm just as excited as if I know that they can win a graded race. They're like my kids, so if your kids do well with a limited ability you're still excited for them.
